HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 cc395-6W
Mr. Todd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what communications he has had with the Kenyan Government over abuses of the human rights of students. [38585]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

We maintain a vigorous dialogue with Kenya on human rights issues, including the treatment of students, through our High Commission in Nairobi and at Ministerial level.

We pressed last year for the repeal of the Public Order Act, the principal legal instrument that had been used to break up meetings organised by Opposition politicians and students. We welcomed its repeal in November, and look to the Kenyan authorities to ensure that non-violent student activities and protests are not obstructed. Our High Commission raised specific cases in which students' human rights had been violated with the Kenyan Attorney General in February.
