HC Deb 18 December 1996 vol 287 cc696-7W
Mr. Byers

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what European Union programmes are covered in the Europes adjustments to her Department's budget; what is the total amount involved in such adjustments; how that total is distributed between the Department's programmes; and how the individual programme adjustments are calculated for both 1996–97 and 1997–98. [9708]

Mr. Paice

Europes adjustments are made to the Department's budget in respect of European Union programmes in which the Department has a policy interest. These programmes are listed.

Total adjustments made to departmental budgets in 1996 were £53 million, £3 million and £4 million for 1997–98, 1998–99 and 1999–2000 respectively. Reductions are distributed between departmental programmes broadly in proportion to their shares of the Department's total programme budget, taking into account specific circumstances which apply to particular programmes. This method was followed by the former Department for Education and the former Employment Department in 1996–97, and by the Department for Education and Employment in 1997–98.
