HL Deb 06 April 1995 vol 563 c35WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, following the example set by Germany, they will propose to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe that all arms shipments to Turkey by participating states be suspended until the Turkish armed forces are withdrawn from northern Iraq.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We have no plans to do so. Turkey is a NATO ally with legitimate defence requirements. Proposed UK arms sales to Turkey are subject to stringent licensing procedures. We do not grant licences for the sale of equipment which we believe is likely to be used for internal repression.
