HL Deb 29 March 1994 vol 553 cc50-2WA
Lord Skelmersdale

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of the budget of the Department of Social Security is contingent on illness and handicap.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Social Security (Viscount Astor)

Data on expenditure for 1993–94 are as yet only provisional. Based upon information currently available it is expected that, in 1993–94, 21 per cent. of the department's expenditure will be in respect of benefits paid to people who are either ill or disabled. A breakdown of this figure is contained in Tables 3 and 5 of the 1994 Social Security Departmental Report:The Government's Expenditure Plans 1994–95 to 1996–97 (cm 2513).
