HL Deb 14 March 1994 vol 553 cc2-3WA
Lord Swinfen

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any United Kingdom civil servants in Bosnia with the United Nations are paid any additional remuneration allowances, including any overtime, and how this compares with remuneration and allowances paid to United Kingdom servicemen.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

There are three UK civil servants based in Bosnia, at Vitez, on four month postings. In addition to their salary, they receive from Her Majesty's Government a daily subsistence rate of US $71 plus the actual cost of bed and breakfast accommodation. They may claim overtime. UK servicemen receive a salary which covers 24 hours duty; they cannot therefore claim overtime. The UN pays troops a daily allowance of US $1.78, plus a lump sum payment of US $73.50 per person to cover rest and recreation (food and accommodation is provided). Her Majesty's Government also pays UK servicemen a telephone allowance of £13.50 per month.

Lord Swinfen

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many United Kingdom civil servants are in Bosnia with the United Nations, and whether they are paid by Her Majesty's Treasury or by the United Nations.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Overseas Development Administration visit Bosnia regularly. There are three UK civil servants based in Bosnia (at Vitez). They are paid by Her Majesty's Government. They do not receive any payments from the United Nations.
