On what basis the current limits on Lords' expenses were set.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Employment (Lord Henley)

Reimbursement allowances for backbench Peers cover four main elements: day subsistence; overnight subsistence; office, secretarial and research expenses; and travel.

The limits for the first and second elements are fixed by the resolution of 25 July 1991, and the limit for the third by the resolutions of 22 July 1980,23 July 1987 and 10 March 1993.

Car mileage allowance is governed by the resolutions of May 1961, December 1964 and 25 July 1983, and the current limits are fixed by resolution B of 26 July 1984. Reimbursement of other travelling expenses is covered by the resolutions of May 1961,18 December 1969,4 July 1972 and 25 July 1983.
