HL Deb 10 March 1994 vol 552 cc17-8WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Foreign Ministers of the European Union have recently discussed developments in the Korean peninsula, and if not, whether they will now do so, in view of the military counter-proliferation capacities the United States is now developing.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The Foreign Ministers of the European Union have not recently discussed developments in the Korean peninsula, and there are no immediate plans for them to do so. We fully support the United States Government, who have been seeking to negotiate arrangements which would permit North Korea to return to a nuclear safeguards inspection regime.

Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of developments in the Korean peninsula, they will encourage other states with military forces in the region to emulate the example of the Japanese Defence Agency in shifting its planned military exercise from the island of Hokkaido to Honshu and to Kyushu and to cease to conduct military exercises in South Korea.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Japan has conducted no military exercises in Korea since the Second World War. We do not intend to discourage other states from conducting exercises under bilateral defence agreements with the Republic of Korea.
