HL Deb 07 March 1994 vol 552 cc92-4WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is the current policy of the Crown Estate Commissioners to sell land on the foreshore and, if so, (a) what is the system for tenders to buy; (b) who is eligible to buy such land; and (c) whether there are any priorities in terms of to whom land may be sold.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Employment (Lord Henley)

It is the policy of the Crown Estate Commissioners not to sell and on the foreshore except in exceptional circumstan-ces. Such exceptional sales might he to statutory undertakers, e. g. for roads, or to riparian owners, where the commissioners consider that it would not be in the Crown Estate's interest to continue to hold the freehold. A high proportion of the foreshore is managed under leasehold arrangements.
