HL Deb 03 March 1994 vol 552 cc84-5WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will suggest to the United Nations Secretary General and to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that the difficulty of providing stipends to the additional troops in Liberia referred to in paragraph 28 of the second Progress Report of the Secretary General on the UN Observer Mission in Liberia (5/1994/168,14 February 1994) could be met by a corresponding reduction in the number of troops contributed by ECOWAS states.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

No. The arrange-ments for funding the peacekeeping operation in Liberia are such that a reduction in the number of troops contributed by ECOWAS states would release no new money for the additional ECOMOG troops referred to in the UN Secretary General's report.
