HL Deb 03 March 1994 vol 552 cc83-4WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will seek to ensure that the possibility of action by NATO air forces remains in place until the "safe areas" as defined by the United Nations, including Tuzla and Mostar, are no longer attacked and bombarded, contrary to international humanitarian law.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

NATO has been ready to provide close air support for UNPROFOR troops in Bosnia, at the request of UNPROFOR commanders, since June 1993. This readiness continues.

On 9 February the North Atlantic Council decided that heavy weapons will be subject to air strikes if they are determined by UNPROFOR to be responsible for attacks on civilian targets in Sarajevo, or if they remain within 20km of Sarajevo and not under UN control, excluding an area 2km from the centre of Pale. This decision remains in force.
