HL Deb 22 July 1994 vol 557 c54WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, following the letter from the United Nations Secretary-General to the President of the Security Council (S/l994/785, 28th June 1994) on his mission to Cyprus, they have decided which of the options set out in the Secretary-General's report of 30th May they will support when the Security Council meets to consider this matter; and what is the proposed date of that meeting.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The UN Secretary General's letter of 28th June brought the Security Council up to date on developments following his report of 30th May. In the light of those developments we favour a two-pronged approach that would combine a process of consultation led by the Secretary General with a view to a fundamental and far-reaching reflection on ways of approaching the Cyprus problem, with a continued effort to secure implementation of the Confidence Building Measures package. The Security Council is expected to decide upon its response shortly.
