HL Deb 13 July 1994 vol 556 cc101-2WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will offer technical advice to the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology Team (EAFG) with the objective of creating a scientific resource capable of deterring future human rights violations by uncovering the facts about violations in the past; and whether they consider that the idea could be applied in other countries where there have been reports of extrajudicial killings, such as Sri Lanka and Turkey.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

We understand that forensic science techniques can usefully be applied in some human right!; cases, for example in the identification of remains. In accordance with UN Commission on Human Rights Resolution 1993/33, we have passed to the UN Centre for Human Rights details of the assistance which the forensic science service can provide. The Guatemalan forensic anthropology team has not approached us for help, but we would consider any such request.
