HL Deb 24 February 1994 vol 552 cc58-60WA
Lord Pearson of Rannoch

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in their implementation of the habitats Directive, any areas of land may be notified, designated or confirmed as Special Areas of

Conservation (SACs) or as Special Protection Areas (SPAs), which have not first been confirmed as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).

Viscount St. Davids

All SPAs classified under the EC Birds Directive have already been notified as SSSIs. It remains the Government's policy that all terrestrial SACs to be designated under the EC Habitats Directive and all future terrestrial SPAs shall first have been notified as SSSIs.
