HL Deb 22 February 1994 vol 552 cc48-9WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether operations of the Combined Joint Task Force (which is of European countries only) are subject to a United States or NATO veto, and what are the political mechanisms governing its possible use.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

The CJTF concept was endorsed by the NATO Summit on 11 January at a mean; to facilitate contingency operations and help provide military capabilities which could be employed by NATO or the Western European Union. It was also agreed that NATO's collective assets could be made available to the WEU after consultations in the North Atlantic Council.
