HL Deb 19 May 1993 vol 545 cc89-90WA
Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their response to Saddam Hussein's decision to de-stabilise Kurdish Iraq by invalidating the Iraqi dinar, which will leave many Kurds bankrupt overnight.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

By introducing a new 25 dinar note and refusing to allow the population of northern Iraq access to banks, the Iraqi government has once again discriminated against the population of northern Iraq. This is in direct contravention of United Nations Security Council Resolution 688, which calls on the government of Iraq to cease immediately the repression of the civilian population. There can be no question of lifting sanctions against Iraq until it complies with all UN Security Council Resolutions, including UNSCR 688.
