HC Deb 11 May 1993 vol 224 c384W
Ms Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will require national health service trusts and health authorities to carry out equal opportunities monitoring of job applications and to publish the results.

Dr. Mawhinney

National health service trusts and health authorities are expected to have an equal opportunities policy, together with mechanisms for monitoring its implementation. They are specifically expected, by the end of 1994, to monitor applicants for medical interviews on the basis of race, gender and speciality. They are also expected to monitor the selection and interview processes for nurse managers as part of "Opportunity 2000".

In addition, we have set up a working group on ethnic minority employment in the NHS which will consider, among other issues, advice on good practice in recruitment and selection.
