HC Deb 04 May 1993 vol 224 cc46-63W
Mr. Kevin Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if there will be a decrease in her Department's contribution to the cost of dental treatment for non-exempt adults in the forthcoming year.

Dr. Mawhinney

This information will not be available until the financial year 1993–94 is complete.

Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many family health services authorities have been unable to provide emergency dental services in each week since 20 November 1992.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 29 April 1993]: The information is contained in the table. General dental practitioners have an obligation under their terms of service to provide emergency cover to their registered patients. They may also offer emergency treatment to non-registered patients. Family health services authorities make arrangements for those patients who are not registered.

Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients have reported to each FHSA that they have been unable to arrange NHS dental treatment in each week since 20 November 1992; and if she will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 29 April 1993]: Since week ending 27 November 1992 only one family health services authority (FHSA), Norfolk, has reported that they have been unable to arrange treatment for some patients. The number of patients each week is contained in the table. The number of patients they have been unable to assist has been decreasing steadily from a high of 228 in week ending 26 March 1993 to 98 in week ending 23 April 1993. The FHSA is satisfied that national health service dental treatment can now be arranged for all patients requesting it.
