HL Deb 24 March 1993 vol 544 cc15-6WA
Lord Kilbracken

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the Answer to Lord Hylton's Question by the Earl of Arran on 15th February (H.L. Deb. col WA 62) how many of the 291 "recognised border crossing points" between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic may be used legally by ordinary cross-border traffic.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Northern Ireland Office (The Earl of Arran)

Of the 219 border crossing points between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, 103 are subject to closure order. It is not, however, possible to state how many of the remainder may be used by ordinary cross-border traffic. Some of the crossings are farm lanes on private land, and access by vehicles to others is limited due to their location in remote or difficult terrain.
