HL Deb 22 March 1993 vol 544 cc6-8WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have any information on the implementation of the Youth Training guarantee in rural areas in which there is little or no public transport.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Employment (Viscount Ullswater)

The statistical information collected on the Youth Training guarantee does not differentiate between rural and non-rural areas. TECs are taking a wide range of initiatives to assist young people into training, including those who live in rural areas.

Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of those aged 16 or 17 during the latest year for which figures are available were offered places on Youth Training at a distance from their homes involving an expenditure of more than £5 per week on fares.

Viscount Ullswater

Information on the expenditure incurred by YT trainees in travelling to their training placement is not collected.

Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they now know:

  1. (a) the median length of a Youth Training course;
  2. (b) the mean length of a Youth Training course; and
  3. (c) the average length of waiting time for a place on a Youth Training course.

Viscount Ullswater

There are no precise figures available, but the latest estimate of the mean length of training was about 74 weeks for those leaving training in Great Britain in 1991–92. No estimate of median duration of a course or average length of waiting time for a place on a course is available.

Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people during the latest year for which figures were available completed a course of Youth Training when they were between the age of 17 years and 9 months and the age of 18 years, and how many of these people:

  1. (a) obtained employment;
  2. (b) entered full-time education;
  3. (c) entered another course of Youth Training; or
  4. WA7
  5. (d) were awarded Income Support under the severe hardship provisions.

Viscount Ullswater

The information asked for is not available at this time. From existing data sources, it is possible to identify the age of a Youth Training leaver only in whole years. Work is in hand to add information on the exact age of a leaver, but this will not be available until the end of March 1993. I will write to the noble Lord when the information is available.

Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people aged 16 and 17, during the latest year for which figures are available, had to wait more than eight weeks for a place on Youth Training.

Viscount Ullswater

There are currently less than 6,750 young people in England covered by the YT Guarantee who have been waiting for a YT place for eight or more weeks. Only 3,800 of these have not previously had the offer of a place.

Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of pregnant women aged 16 or 17 during the latest year for which figures are available were successful in obtaining a Youth Training place within eight weeks.

Viscount Ullswater

Information on the number of young women who are pregnant and seeking a Youth Training place is not collected.
