HC Deb 21 July 1993 vol 229 c267W
25. Mr. John Marshall

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many jobs were created or retained as a result of inward investment into the United Kingdom in 1992.

Mr. Sainsbury

My Department's Invest in Britain Bureau's—IBB—recent annual report, a copy of which is in the Library, shows that some 56,471 jobs were created or retained between 1 April 1992 and 31 March 1993. The figures are based on information provided by the companies at the time of the announcement to invest. There is no requirement to notify the Department and so the figures include only those projects where the IBB and its regional partners were involved or which have come to their notice.

Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many jobs he estimates have come from inward investment since 1979 and in which main areas; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sainsbury

Since 1979 it is estimated that 526,000 jobs have been associated with inward investment decisions. The largest number of jobs have been in Scotland, 16.5 per cent.; West Midlands, 14.6 per cent.; and Wales, 14.1 per cent. The figures are based on information provided by the companies at the time of the announcement to invest. There is no requirement to notify the Department and so the figures include only those projects where the IBB and its regional partners were involved or which have come to their notice.
