HL Deb 10 February 1993 vol 542 cc45-6WA
Lord Tebbit

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Treaty of Maastricht in any way whatsoever imposes any obligations or duties upon, grants to, or takes away any powers, prerogatives or privileges from, or changes the status or constitutional position of, the Monarch.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The treaty in no way alters the Monarch's constitutional position in the United Kingdom. Nor does it impose specific duties on any individuals. Her Majesty would he entitled to exercise the rights set out in Articles 8 to 8e of the Maastricht Treaty. But in this, she would act on the advice of Ministers.
