HL Deb 15 April 1993 vol 544 cc93-4WA
Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Who is responsible for meeting the deficit if a school which has opted out of the LEA system spends more than its grant income.

The Minister of State, Department for Education (Baroness Blatch)

Governors of self-governing state schools (grant maintained) are responsible for ensuring that deficits of this nature do not arise. If such deficit should arise, it would fall to the school to absorb the deficit through funds received in the following period in the same way that any surplus of income over expenditure may, subject to strict limits, be carried forward for use in subsequent periods.
