§ Mrs. Mahon
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what part of the United States military operates from Menwith hill, north Yorkshire.

§ Mr. Archie Hamilton
Personnel from all four United States armed services are employed at Menwith hill.

§ Mrs. Mahon
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many people are employed at Menwith hill, north Yorkshire by(a) the National Security Agency and (b) the British Government.

§ Mr. Archie Hamilton
Currently some 1,200 United States department of defence personnel and 560 United Kingdom nationals are employed at Menwith hill.

§ Mrs. Mahon
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he will make a statement on the past, present and future role of the base at Menwith hill, north Yorkshire;
(2) what is the purpose of the underground operations at Menwith hill, north Yorkshire.

§ Mr. Archie Hamilton
The United States communications facility at Menwith hill is located on a Ministry of Defence site made available to the United States department of defence. It is an integral part of the world wide department of defence communications network but I am not prepared to comment further on its operational role. It operates with the full knowledge and consent of Her Majesty's Government.
