§ 20. Mr. Alton
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present level of consumer debt; and what was the comparable level of debt in 1982.

§ Mr. Nelson
The level of consumer debt outstanding at 30 September this year was £53 billion. The best estimate for the end of 1982 is £16 billion in 1982 prices, although changes in coverage mean that the figures are not strictly comparable.
