HL Deb 25 June 1991 vol 530 c37WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Following the Earl of Caithness's written reply of 12th June (WA 61), whether they agree that the practical effect of the United Kingdom immigration rules will be to divert people of Jewish origin, wishing to leave the Soviet Union and other countries, from Britain towards Israel.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)

No. Our immigration rules do not discriminate on the grounds of race or religion.

It is not for the British Government to take a view on the destinations of people emigrating from the Soviet Union or other countries.
