HL Deb 01 July 1991 vol 530 cc50-1WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many prisoner places are not in use in Her Majesty's prisons because of industrial disputes; and whether they will list the prisons concerned and the numbers involved in each.

Earl Ferrers

On 24th June 1991, 404 cells were not in use as a consequence of recent industrial disputes. The following prison establishments were affected:

cells
Full Sutton 192
Acklington 152
Huntercombe 60
Agreement has, however, been reached at each of these establishments recently which will enable them to start taking additional prisoners from 8th July onwards at Full Sutton and 15th July onwards at Acklington. Huntercombe is now available to take additional prisoners.

The above places are certified normal accommodation. In addition, Prison Service management has been unable to use places which are available within the operational capacities of some overcrowded establishments. The establishments concerned include Liverpool, Pentonville, Cardiff, Shepton Mallett and Hindley.
