HC Deb 03 December 1991 vol 200 c114W
Mr. Shersby

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information he has on the cost of fluoridating the public water supply in England and Wales; and if he will make an estimate expressing the cost per thousand of the population.

Mr. Dorrell

The cost of fluoridating water is for negotiation locally between district health authorities and water undertakers. Costs fluctuate from area to area. The best estimate is as shown in table:

Population served by the water treatment works Capital Cost (£000) Recurrent cost(per 1,000 head of population) (£)
50,000–100,000 150–200 320
100,000–250,000 160–220 220
250,000–450,000 200–250 160
