HL Deb 16 October 1990 vol 522 c883WA
Lord Trefgarne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their policy with regard to the lighting of motorways.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

The general policy is to light all four-lane motorways to facilitate safe and free flow of traffic. The decision whether to light three-lane motorways depends on an assessment of costs and benefits and takes account of road safety and environmental factors. In the case of new roads an assessment is invariably made prior to construction. Decisions whether to light existing roads are based on a similar type of assessment in accordance with guidelines published by the department.
