HL Deb 01 March 1990 vol 516 c959WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Goverment:

What they have done, apart from protests, to secure the release of two British citizens detained in Iraq, Mr. Farzad Bazoft and Miss Daphne Parish, and what further steps they will now take, following the announcement that Mr. Bazoft and Miss Parish are to be tried on charges of espionage.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

We have made over 40 appeals to the Iraqi authorities, including at the highest ministerial level, on behalf of Mrs. Parish, who is a British national, and Mr. Bazoft, who is not. While it is not for us to interfere in Iraq's legal processes, we have made it clear to the Iraqi Government that we expect both detainees to be given a proper and fair trial.
