What were the first two recommendations made by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 390(v) of 2nd December 1950 on Eritrea; whether the United Kingdom supported that resolution; whether that resolution has ever been rescinded by the General Assembly, and whether, as the power responsible for Eritrea before its federation with Ethiopia, they will now offer their good offices in reaching a settlement of the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, based on the principle of self-determination.
§ The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Brabazon of Tara)The first two recomrrendations of UN General Assembly Resolution 390(v) of 2nd December 1950 were:
- 1. Eritrea shall constitute an autonomous unit federated with Ethiopia under the sovereignty of the Ethiopian Crown.
- 2. The Eritrean Government shall possess legislative executive and judicial powers in the field of domestic affairs.
The United Kingdom voted in favour. The General Assembly has passed no further resolution on the subject.
The United Kingdom's responsibility ended when power was transferred on 15th September 1952.
There are already negotiations between the parties under the auspices of former Presidents Carter and Nyerere, to which we are giving active support.
