HC Deb 02 November 1989 vol 159 c327W
41. Rev. Ian Paisley

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the future of the Ulster Defence Regiment.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The Ulster Defence Regiment is an indispensable element of the Army's efforts in support of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland. I have every confidence that the overwhelming majority of the UDR will continue to carry out their duties professionally, loyally and impartially. The UDR will continue to play its part in the fight against terrorism and no changes are envisaged in its role.
