HL Deb 30 January 1989 vol 503 c977WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What evidence they received from Dr. Eric Charles at a meeting with Foreign Office officials on 16th December concerning atrocities committed by Ethiopian forces against civilians in Tigray, and whether they will draw this to the attention of the 45th session of the UN Human Rights Commission under Item 12 of the agenda for that session.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Glenarthur)

Officials listened with interest and sympathy to Dr. Charles's report and will carefully study his final report and photographs once these are available. We are seriously concerned at continuing allegations of the use of napalm and of the bombing of civilians in Tigray, and have raised the matter with the Ethiopian Government. We shall express our concern under Item 12(D) at the UN Human Rights Commission.
