HL Deb 13 April 1989 vol 506 cc479-80WA
Baroness Masham of Ilton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether cattle and sheep can contract tuberculosis if they graze alongside an infected herd of deer.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Baroness Trumpington)

Cattle, and to a lesser extent sheep, are susceptible to infection with Mycobacterium bovis, as are deer. The potential for transmission of the disease must always be considered to exist whenever infected animals are in contact with susceptible stock whether of the same or other species.
