HC Deb 11 November 1988 vol 140 c318W
Ms. Armstrong

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what studies the Government have undertaken into the numbers of girls studying craft design and technology in(a) secondary schools (i) within years one to three, (ii) within years four to five, (iii) in the sixth form and (b) tertiary or sixth-form colleges; and what were the results.

Mrs. Rumbold

Evidence from the 1986–87 school leavers survey of examination entries suggests that girls were significantly under represented among those studying craft, design and technology in years four and five of secondary school and in the sixth form. Information from the youth cohort study about what school leavers say they have studied corroborates that evidence. No other information of the kind requested about courses taken is available centrally.
