HL Deb 26 May 1988 vol 497 cc1095-6WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will point out to the Government of Turkey the apparent incompatibility of EC membership with the violation of the right of freedom of expression exemplified by the demand by the state prosecutor for sentences of five to 15 years' imprisonment on Dr. Dikerden and Mrs. Isvan, leaders of the Turkish Peace Association.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Glenarthur)

The Turkish government are fully aware of the level of concern in member states of the EC about human rights in Turkey.
