HL Deb 06 December 1988 vol 502 c557WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the prisons where there are Braille units, and in each case, what is the number of prisoners engaged in this work.

Earl Ferrers

The prison service currently has four Braille units where prisoners process a wide variety of material, either for the Royal National Institute for the Blind or for local Colleges or Associations for the Blind. The four units and the number of prisoners employed in them are Aylesbury Young Offenders Institution (18); Gloucester Prison (4); Maidstone Prison (8); and Wakefield Prison (16). The Gloucester unit has only just been opened; the number of prisoners employed will increase to 25 in due course.
