HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 c211W
Mr. Bernie Grant

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many South Africans were admitted to the United Kingdom between 1 January 1986 and 1 January 1987; what was their average length of stay in the United Kingdom; what were the main reasons for their visits; and if he will provide a breakdown according to ethnic groups;

(2) how many South African business people were admitted to the United Kingdom from I January 1986 to 1 January 1987; and what was their average length of stay.

Mr. Renton

The numbers of South African nationals admitted to the United Kingdom in 1986, and their categories of admission, are published in table 1 of "Control of Immigration: Statistics, United Kingdom 1986" (Cm. 166). Information on length of stay is not available for the great majority of persons admitted to the United Kingdom nor is any record kept of the ethnic origin of passengers admitted.
