To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many black prison officers there are in the United Kingdom.

[holding answer 5 November 1987]: I regret that this information is not available for the prison service in England and Wales. We have instituted a voluntary system of monitoring the ethnic background of new prison service recruits and are anxious to encourage more members of the ethnic communities to apply for prison service vacancies.
