Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the figures for the first half of 1987 of the number of persons proceeded against for scheduled offences in Northern Ireland; how many persons pleaded guilty to the principal offence; and how many persons in such contested cases were found not guilty of the principal offence.

Mr. Stanley

During the first six months of 1987, a total of 390 persons were tried for indictable scheduled offences by a judge sitting without a jury, 352 pleaded guilty and 38 pleaded not guilty. 18 of the latter were found not guilty.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people were charged with scheduled offences in Northern Ireland in the first six months of 1987.
