HC Deb 04 December 1987 vol 123 c753W
Mr. Bernie Grant

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give details of the amount of expenditure to be met by(a) the Government and (b) the National Health Service as a result of the national pay awards for National Health Service workers which have been agreed for the current financial year.

Mr. Newton

For the review body awards for staff working in the hospital and community health services the information requested is as follows:

£ million (England)
Estimated cost 488
Cost covered by allocations to health authorities 464
Difference to be met by authorities from their cost improvement programmes 24

Pay increases of around 5 per cent. have been agreed for a number of non-review body staff groups. Others have yet to settle. Authorities will be expected to meet the cost of these awards from the resources available to them, including resources released by their cost-improvement programmes.
