HC Deb 04 March 1986 vol 93 c80W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many parents have been (a) prosecuted and (b) convicted for failure to ensure their child's school attendance in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Mellor

The available information, which may be incomplete, relates to defendants proceeded against for offences against the Education Act 1944 and is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales"—offence classification 112 of table S1.S (A) of volume 1 of the supplementary tables for 1984. This information does not distinguish offences of failure to secure regular school attendance from other offences under this Act; nor is it possible to distinguish defendants who are parents from those who are guardians.
