HL Deb 01 July 1986 vol 477 c870WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list those prisons with Braille units, and those where inmates employed in their cells do Braille work; and whether if so when it is intended to reopen the Braille unit at Wormwood Scrubs.

Lord Glenarthur

Training courses in Braille transcription are provided at Aylesbury Youth Custody Centre and at Wakefield Prison. No central record is maintained of the other establishments where inmates undertake Braille work either singly or in groups on an informal basis. There are no plans at present to re-start the previous informal arrangements whereby inmates at Wormwood Scrubs undertook Braille transcription work, but the regime of the establishment will shortly be reviewed and this will be considered.
