HL Deb 27 January 1986 vol 470 cc530-1WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many C Category prisoners are accommodated in prisons designed for A Category prisoners in each region, and what spare accommodation in C Category prisons there is in each region.

Lord Glenarthur

On 30th September 1985, the most recent date for which figures are currently available, there were 333 Category C prisoners in dispersal prisons as follows:

Nearly two-thirds of these were in establishments in the North Region. The number of Category C prisoners in North Region dispersal prisons will fall substantially with the forthcoming conversions of Hull to a local prison and Thorp Arch to a Category C prison.

It is not recorded centrally how many of the Category C prisoners in dispersal prisons were awaiting transfers.
