HL Deb 24 May 1984 vol 452 cc397-8WA
Lord Brockway

asked Her Majesty's Government:

On whose authority the 'S' District of the Metropolitan Police organised a "Military Fayre" at their Sports Club, Bushey, on Sunday, 20th May, at which the RAF and other armed forces participated; and whether they endorse this association of the police with the armed forces for military propaganda.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)

The "Military Fayre" was organised by officers of 'S' District with the full support of the local commander. It was one of a series of initiatives by the commander designed to foster good relations between the police and the community. With the presence of both the army barracks at Mill Hill and the RAF Museum at Hendon, the armed services have strong local connections with 'S' District and their participation contributed greatly to the success of the occasion.

The Fayre was not designed for propaganda purposes. Most of the events at the Fayre had no military connection; and the proceeds of the day will be donated to local charities nominated by the Mayors of Hertsmere and Barnet as well as to military and police charities.
