HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c165W
Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he has taken to persuade industry to train the increasing number of people taking early retirement so as to enable them to take up another career in which they will continue to make a contribution to the community.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The Government recognise the need for individuals to have access to training throughout their working lives and later this year we will be launching a campaign to increase awareness of the importance of training.

Primary responsibility for meeting training needs rests with employers themselves, although the Government will continue to fund directly a substantial amount of training, both to supplement employers' efforts and to help individuals cope with the effects of career and job changes.
