HL Deb 31 July 1984 vol 455 c776WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about the reported intention of the Chilean authorities to expel Sr. Juan Barra, vice-president of Codepu, one of the main human rights organisations in that country; Dr. Leopold Ortega, a doctor working for the Chilean Commission for Human Rights, and Sr. Jaime Insunza, former general secretary of the Democratic Popular Movement, and how they reconcile these further expulsions with the claim made at the meeting on 30th January between Lady Young and representatives of organisations interested in human rights in Chile that, "a significant number of Chilean exiles had been allowed to return to the country".

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Young)

We have received reports of these recent expulsions. We deplore this practice. We have, however, welcomed the earlier decision of the Chilean Government to allow other exiles to return home.
