HC Deb 20 December 1983 vol 51 c202W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when the Committee on Safety of Medicines is expected to conclude its consideration of the safety of Osmosin.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Committee on Safety of Medicines has not yet reached any conclusions on the safety of Osmosin. The drug was, of course, withdrawn voluntarily from the United Kingdom market in September of this year.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much has been spent by the National Health Service through prescription of Osmosin rather than its generic substitute.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Osmosin, now withdrawn, was a special sustained release formulation of indomethacin for which there was no generic equivalent. Prescribing figures for individual named drugs are of commercial value to competitors of the manufacturers and we do not therefore divulge them or information which would enable such figures to be calculated.
