HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c374W
Mr. Raffan

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many new jobs have been created in Wales since June 1979.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Comprehensive information is not available. However, the latest figures as to the number of jobs to be provided from allocations of Government factories or offers of selective financial assistance accepted promise some 50,000 jobs in the period May 1979 to November 1983.

Mr. Raffan

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many jobs were created in Wales by overseas companies in the 10 years prior to European Community entry, and in the 10 years since.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Overseas companies which opened in the 10 years prior to our accession to the European Community now provide 4,900 jobs; those which opened in the succeeding 10 years currently employ just over 9,100 people. These figures do not include acquisitions made of existing Welsh units by overseas based concerns.

Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make an estimate of the number of jobs created in manufacturing in Wales since 1979 as a result of Welsh Office initiative and publicly-led investment.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

[pursuant to his reply, 8 December 1983, c. 249]: Projects in Wales for which offers of selective financial assistance under section 7 of the Industrial Development Act 1982 were accepted by manufacturers between January 1979 and November 1983 are expected to create about 31,000 new jobs over a three to four year period.
