asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he proposes to introduce any measures to curb the amount of overtime being worked in industry to provide work for the unemployed; and if he will make a statement.

It is for individual employers in consultation with their employees to decide whether a reduction in overtime suits their circumstances. In doing

A precise breakdown of the applications disallowed is not available, but they include between 500 and 550 from the cotton industry, about 75 slate and about 75 pottery. Most of the remainder were applications from or in respect of

  1. persons not determined by a pneumoconiosis or silicosis medical board to be suffering from any of the diseases covered by the Act;
  2. coal miners who are covered by the National Coal Board's pneumoconiosis compensation scheme.

The payments made under the Act by 2 October totalled £20,828,705.
