§ Mr. Mayhew[pursuant to his reply, 23 March 1981, c. 212]: The number of females received into prison department establishments in England and Wales in 1978 for soliciting and similar offences other than brothel keeping was 189. This figure includes those received in default of payment of a fine. The corresponding total for 1979 was 157. The number of these females who received their first custodial sentence for soliciting is not available. Figures for 1980 are not yet available.
